"Bryn Mawr Vineyards 2016 Tempranillo, Eola-Amity Hills - Perched on the upper crest of the acclaimed Eola-Amity Hills, Bryn Mawr’s 40-acre LIVE-certified estate is battered by powerful winds sweeping through the Van Duzer Corridor from the Pacific Coast. Their vines are anchored into rocky volcanic soils on the steep vineyard and produce powerful characteristics across their entire portfolio. The whites and pinks are nervy, acid-driven and refreshingly crisp. The reds are bold and edgy, as is their Tempranillo. Dark violet in color, they sport a nose that is rich and lifted with sweet vanilla bean and cocoa butter st the outset. After a twirl, the dried cherry, sweet fig and pepper notes come jumping out to greet you. The palate is smooth and complete. Concentrated fruit and earthy cocoa nibs emerge on the midpalate, while the tannins are perfectly balanced and satisfying all the way to the end. Rachel Rose is both the winemaker and vineyard director for Bryn Mawr, giving her complete control from grape to glass. Under her leadership, they’re crafting wines of great complexity and tension and have continually elevated their production and quality recently. "In 2012, Rose switched to eco-glass for half of Bryn Mawr’s 6,500-case run of wines—a decision that allows the winery to ship 56 cases per truckload as opposed to the 42 cases that fit using ultra-premium bottles. “I started thinking about how that would reduce the number of delivery trips, which would ultimately reduce the wear and tear on the roads, and the tires, which would need to be replaced less and less often,” says Rose. “It sounds crazy, and it’s unquantifiable, but once you let your imagination go, you realize that even chipping away at some of these issues can make a big difference.”

"The difficult we do right away; the impossible takes a little longer." For Jon and Kathy Lauer, owners of Byrn Mawr Vineyards, this adage feels familiar.

The couple’s foray into wine started in 2009, after purchasing 20 acres in the Eola-Amity Hills area, northwest of Salem. It was a steep, challenging site, and the Lauer's were new to it all.

Although inexperienced, the two attorneys from San Diego were enthusiastic about their new retirement venture. They turned the existing house into living quarters on the main floor and built a winery/tasting room in the basement. The couple then hired young Rachel Rose, a novice winemaker. A risky decision at the time, but a great one in the end: Rose remains the foundation of the winery’s success.
