Autumn’s awesome in Willamette Valley wine country
“Dave Lauer, whose family owns Bryn Mawr Vineyards, points to a break in the silhouette of Oregon’s Coast Range.
“That’s the Van Duzer Corridor,” he says. “When the wind comes blowing through there in the afternoon, we sometimes have to close all the patio umbrellas or they’d go flying off.”
It is 2:30 p.m. on a mid-October afternoon and I can feel the air stirring, but as we linger through the next hour, the umbrellas stay put. I’m a little disappointed about the lack of drama, but not at all in the more-than-spectacular view from both Bryn Mawr’s patio and airy, wood-beamed tasting room. The multicolored Adirondack chairs lining the lawn add a touch of whimsey to the ultra-green, hillside property.“

Bryn Mawr Vineyards 2022 Estate Pinot Noir:
“Thyme and Hen-of-the-Wood mushroom introduce a savory element before scents of hibiscus and cola allude to the delights ahead. What the nose suggests, the palate confirms. Cherry pie, Red Vines and a dash of holiday spices provoke youthful recollections. Expressive tannins and acidity increase in elegance as the steadfast ending prompts another sip.“

OREGON REPORT: Oregon Regains Its Rhythm in 2023
“After reviewing hundreds of wines from across Oregon this year (2022s and 2023s mostly), one thing is clear: the 2023 vintage marks a turning point for the Willamette Valley. It’s a vintage of poise and one that balances freshness and fruit density, elegance and texture. For those who have followed Oregon’s swings between cool restraint and ripened exuberance over the past few years, 2023 feels like the recalibration we’ve been waiting for.
This report draws from months of tastings across the Willamette Valley’s core AVAs (Eola-Amity Hills, Dundee Hills, Yamhill-Carlton, McMinnville, and Ribbon Ridge) alongside a handful of releases from neighboring regions. While Pinot Noir and Chardonnay continue to anchor Oregon’s identity, the real revelation of 2023 might be the quiet rise of Riesling, led by producers who are giving the grape new vitality and voice in this cooler, balanced vintage.“
A Weighty Subject
“In the Willamette Valley, the grape’s path has been more challenging. Rachel Rose, winemaker and vineyard manager at Bryn Mawr Vineyards, remembers how the vines refused to ripen fruit in 2010. Yet, she and owner Jon Lauer persisted. “The idea of crafting a bold wine that was wildly different from Pinot Noir intrigued me… we were determined not to give up on it.”
That resolve continues in the cellar, where the Tempranillo, made in the tradition of Spain’s Gran Reserva, spends more than three years in barrel before bottling. The result, Rose shares, is a wine with length, complexity and substantial structure, perfect with hearty fare. “A dark and reduced oxtail braise is one of my favorite decadent winter meals.“
In need of an escape? Consider these unexpected autumn travel destinations
“Autumn brings with it colourful foliage sure, but it also entails back-to-school, chillier temperatures and shorter days. And while you might feel that this time of year signals the end of holiday fun, think again: autumn is one of the best times of the year to travel. Wine country comes alive as harvest begins.”

Bryn Mawr Vineyards 2024 Estate Pinot Blanc:
“Eola-Amity Hills Meadow flowers, green apple and snow leopard melon lead the nose, accented by candied apple and a delicate nuttiness. Juicy gushes of peach, cotton candy grapes and starfruit are supported by sunquat and a touch of spearmint. Restrained bitterness intersects the sweetness, uplifting the lengthy ending.“

Tim left Oregon in 1999 to pursue a career in the entertainment industry where he rose to head film restoration artist for Sony Pictures. After a nearly 20 year career as a respected film editor, he felt his passion for wine was pushing him to explore a new direction. He began enology and viticulture classes while closing out a career in film and moved back to the Willamette Valley in 2018 to complete his degree in viticulture management.
