Our Name

Bryn Mawr is a classic Welsh phrase meaning “High Hill.”  Bryn Mawr was founded in 1989 by David Lloyd-Jones, whose Welsh background inspired him to name the vineyard.  Used in the context of viticulture and enology, Bryn Mawr means a great place to grow grapes high on a hill -- a Welsh version of terroir. The soil types, orientation to the sun, climate and elevation work together to shape the nature of the fruit. This influence on the fruit makes site selection the first, and one of the most important, choices in the process of making a great wine.

It is in the spirit of adventure, the pursuit of excellence through knowledge and experience, that Bryn Mawr Vineyards received its name. Our work with the vines and the wines is a process and a journey, where human intervention plays a supporting role in the best long term interest of the vines and our wines.
